Course Description:

This one-day training was created to support and enhance the practice of FAR in implementing counties in New York. The principles and concepts of risk and safety introduced in this training are consistent with the concepts in the New York Child Protective Services core training on safety, based on the laws of the State of New York, and are the foundation of best practice for family assessment. The content of this training is specific to the primary necessity for each worker to assess initially, and throughout the life of the FAR case, both risk and safety elements that may compromise the safety of children in the home. This training will enhance workers’ ability to integrate protocols for safety and risk assessment with the core principles and values of family engagement and partnership required for effective FAR practice.

At the completion of this one-day training, participants will demonstrate the following competencies:

  • The participant can demonstrate how to apply risk and safety assessment protocols and tools within a CPS family assessment response (FAR) practice with families.
  • The participant can employ solution-focused casework practice skills, tools, and techniques to engage families in the assessment of safety and risk in FAR.
  • The participant can develop a family-led assessment strategy to effectively assess for safety, risk, and needs with a family in a family assessment response.
  • The participant can demonstrate and actively participate in a group case consultation process of FAR casework.
